About Redact PDF
Redacting a PDF means permanently removing sensitive information so it can never be recovered โ not simply covering it with a black box that can be removed later. Romow's PDF Redactor overwrites the selected content directly in the document structure, so the original data is gone for good.
The most common use case is preparing documents for sharing: legal teams redacting client names before disclosure, HR departments removing salary information from shared org charts, healthcare administrators scrubbing patient identifiers before sending records externally, and individuals protecting their personal details before submitting documents online.
Romow supports four redaction methods. Smart Presets let you click once to black out all email addresses, phone numbers, credit card numbers, Social Security numbers, dates, monetary amounts, URLs, or IP addresses across every page. Custom Keywords let you type specific words or phrases to redact. Regex Patterns give you full control for complex formats like passport numbers or custom ID schemes. Entire Pages lets you black out complete pages when the content is too sensitive to partially redact.
You can choose between a black fill (standard), white fill (invisible, for internal use), or grey fill. All redactions are applied at 300 DPI precision, ensuring clean edges even at high zoom levels.
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. Romow redacts by overwriting the content in the PDF's underlying data structure โ not by placing a visible layer on top. The original text cannot be recovered by removing a layer, copying text, or any other method.
All redaction modes process the entire document automatically. The 'Entire Pages' mode accepts comma-separated page numbers (e.g. 1, 3, 5-9) to redact multiple pages in one operation.
Currently Romow processes one file per job. For bulk redaction needs, please contact us at sales@romow.com to discuss volume options.
The tool performs a case-insensitive search. If no matches are found, the file is returned unchanged with a notification confirming zero instances were redacted.
Keyword and pattern redaction require text data. For scanned PDFs, use the 'Entire Pages' option, or run OCR first to make the text searchable before redacting.
Your file is processed on our secure server and automatically deleted within 24 hours. We never read, store, or share your document content.
